On Saturday, I finally got to do a ride I had been planning on for years, the Central Ohio Tour de Cure, benefiting the American Diabetes Association. This ride was the first reason I even bought my road bike this year, and the whole experience, from fundraising to the finish, was absolutely perfect.

The weather was amazing. A light breeze, low 70s and mostly sunny, with just enough clouds to make the sky look that much more blue. Our 62 mile route took us through some beautiful rolling hills and graceful farmland in Franklin, Licking and Delaware counties.

Tom had a bit of a problem with his rear wheel, as a few spokes were giving up the ghost, causing it to go out of true and hop pretty badly. But even that couldn’t spoil the mood, and we were met by the SAG wagon once to try and fix it. Great guys.

The mood was relaxed, the other riders friendly, and the pace was easy.We picked it up when we felt like it, and relaxed when we didn’t, and yelled and laughed and sang our way through all 62 miles. We sprinted the last 5 miles to the finish, crossing the line to cheers and cowbells from volunteers, supporters and other riders. It was hard not to get emotional.
It was just a great event, all the way around. In the end, some 438 riders raised almost $163,000, including the $270 that was donated on my behalf. I can’t thank everyone who donated enough! Every dollar meant the world to me, and to Tom.
